Abstract. The article is devoted to the origins and current state of staff training for museums and the field of heritage protection at the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture. Methodological approaches to the development and implementation of educational strategy and practice are revealed, which emphasize interdisciplinary connections and disciplinary «mutual assistance». Based on the analysis of the experience of training museologists since 1988, a number of key aspects of museological education have been identified. The development of museology as an independent academic and scientific discipline and the establishment of the Department as the center of the St. Petersburg scientific school of Museology are identified as priorities. Special attention is paid to the content and dynamics of the educational concept of museology training. The importance of educational and methodological support for museological education at all levels is shown, and the need for close cooperation with museum institutions and organizations is emphasized as an important factor in mastering museum professions. The most important and decisive role of the teaching staff and their qualifications in the educational and educational process is revealed. It is concluded that the historical path and modern achievements of the Department testify to the effectiveness of the implemented museological education, based on a scientifically sound and pedagogically proven strategy, on the use of modern educational technologies, which ensures high-quality training of a museum specialist.
