Abstract. This article provides a comprehensive examination of the formation and development of periodical publications in the museum field. The chronological scope of the study covers the period from the mid-19th century to the first quarter of the 21st century. From the early 20th century, the article highlights the contribution of leading specialized journals published in European countries, the United States, and within international museum organizations to the development of museum theory and practice.
A special focus is placed on the history of museum periodicals in Kazakhstan. The study examines publications starting with the journal «Qazaqьstan ortalьq musejinin tili – Bulletin of the Central Museum of Kazakhstan» (1930), as well as journals and bulletins of regional museums during the years of independence, including Museums of Kazakhstan – Қазақстан музейлері, Mädeni Mura, scientific-practical, and electronic publications of recent years. Each publication’s thematic focus, scientific-methodological level, and impact on museum theory and practice are analyzed.
The study results define the role of museum periodicals in developing museum practice in Kazakhstan, disseminating professional experience, and fostering scientific communication. Additionally, attention is given to current issues such as improving the quality of domestic museum publications, enhancing the peer-review system, and ensuring accessibility of electronic versions.
